Demonfire

Demonfire was originally introduced in the Dissension set in 2006, but this specific iteration was released in 2008 as part of the Duel Decks: Jace vs. Chandra product. These decks were designed by Wizards of the Coast to feature pre-constructed, balanced thematic battles that highlighted the iconic rivalry between two of Magic: The Gathering's most prominent planeswalkers. By reprinting powerful sorcery spells like Demonfire within the Chandra-themed deck, the designers aimed to reinforce her signature identity as a red-aligned pyromancer focused on aggressive, fire-based damage.

The artwork for this reprint was illustrated by Anthony Francisco, who sought to capture the visceral intensity of Chandra’s elemental magic. The design focuses on the raw, destructive energy of a fire spell capable of overwhelming opponents, consistent with the card's mechanic of being difficult to counter if enough mana is invested. Upon its release, the Duel Decks series was well-received by the player community for providing an accessible entry point into the game's lore and offering stylized versions of classic cards that players already valued for their competitive utility.
