Desert Sandstorm

Desert Sandstorm was released in 1999 as part of the Portal Three Kingdoms expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was uniquely designed to serve as an introductory product for the Asian market, focusing on characters and events from the 14th-century Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. By stripping away some of the game's more complex mechanics, Wizards of the Coast aimed to make the game accessible to new players while offering established collectors a thematic departure from traditional Western fantasy settings.

The card's artwork, credited to artist Ian Miller, reflects the distinct illustrative style employed throughout the Portal series. Miller, a veteran fantasy illustrator known for his surreal and atmospheric work, utilized a gothic, ink-heavy aesthetic to depict the card's theme. While the card is often cited by collectors for its niche utility within the game's broader ecosystem, its value today is largely derived from the set's limited distribution, which was primarily restricted to the Asia-Pacific region before gaining a cult following among global collectors.
