Where it came from
Detention Sphere was originally introduced in the 2012 Return to Ravnica expansion as a powerful enchantment designed to provide versatility and interaction for Azorius-aligned decks. Its design reflects the rigid, bureaucratic, and controlling nature of the Azorius Senate, capturing the essence of 'detaining' an opponent's permanent within a magical construct until the sphere is removed.
The RNA Guild Kit version, released in 2019, features updated art by Svetlin Velinov that reinforces the clean, white-and-blue aesthetic of the Ravnica plane. This specific printing was created as part of a curated collection designed to celebrate the history of the Azorius guild, and it was generally well-received by players for its balance of utility and thematic resonance within the guild-focused gameplay of the Ravnica Allegiance era.
