Where it came from
Devious Cover-Up was released as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt set in September 2021. Designed for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, the card reflects the set's gothic horror theme, which explores themes of mystery, ritual, and the encroaching darkness of the plane of Innistrad. It functions as a counterspell with a graveyard-shuffling utility, fitting the set's focus on flashback and graveyard-related mechanics.
The artwork was created by illustrator Manuel Castañón, who utilized a moody, atmospheric aesthetic to capture the card's theme of deception and concealment. By depicting a shadowed, unsettling figure amidst the fog-drenched architecture of Innistrad, the illustration aims to evoke a sense of quiet dread. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, if situational, piece of graveyard interaction for players interested in control-oriented strategies.
