Where it came from
Diamond Lion was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a functional riff on the iconic 1993 card Lion's Eye Diamond, reimagining the original high-stakes, high-mana-efficiency artifact as a creature that requires tap and mana investment to activate. Its inclusion in the set was intended to provide players with a creature-based engine for graveyard-focused strategies, blending classic game mechanics with updated card types.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Titus Lunter, who emphasized the creature’s regal and crystalline aesthetic to evoke the 'Diamond' portion of its identity. The design sought to balance the card's powerful ability—which allows players to discard their hand for mana—with the limitations of a creature card type, making it a nuanced addition to Eternal formats like Modern and Legacy. It was received by the community as a strategic niche card that invites careful deck-building rather than acting as a universal staple.
