Where it came from
Dig Through Time was originally printed as a rare card in the 2014 Magic: The Gathering set Khans of Tarkir. The card features a mechanic called delve, which allows players to reduce the mana cost of a spell by exiling cards from their graveyard, reflecting the set's thematic focus on the shifting timelines and historical echoes of the plane of Tarkir. This specific version is a promotional printing released in conjunction with the main set's launch.
The artwork for this promo iteration was crafted by illustrator Daarken, who leaned into the surreal, ethereal aesthetic of the Sultai Brood, one of the five warring clans on Tarkir that utilized necromancy and ancient secrets. The design conveys a sense of depth and excavation, mirroring the card's function of digging through a library of cards to find essential resources. Upon release, the card was widely recognized by the competitive community for its high power level, becoming a staple in multiple eternal formats.
