Where it came from
The Dimir Guildmage was released as part of the Ravnica: City of Guilds expansion in 2005, serving as a signature creature for House Dimir, one of the ten iconic guilds of the Ravnica plane. This specific version, marked with the star symbol and collector number 245, was distributed as a promotional foil card, often awarded to participants in release events or sanctioned tournaments to celebrate the new set's unique dual-color mechanical identity.
The card’s artwork was rendered by Greg Staples, who captured the shadowy, secretive aesthetic characteristic of the Dimir guild. By emphasizing the cold, cerebral atmosphere of Ravnica’s underworld, Staples created a visual identity that resonated with players focusing on control and hand disruption strategies. Upon its release, the card became a staple for local store play, valued by collectors both for its utility in gameplay and its distinct, reflective foil treatment.
