Provenance

Where it came from

The Dire Fleet Poisoner was released as a promotional card for the Rivals of Ixalan expansion, which launched in early 2018. This set focused on the exploration and conquest themes of the Ixalan plane, specifically highlighting the conflict between various factions including the vampire-led Legion of Dusk and the pirate-led Dire Fleet. As a promo card, this version featured unique alternate artwork intended to distinguish it from the standard release found in booster packs.

The artwork for this version was commissioned to emphasize the stealthy, lethal nature of the vampire pirates associated with the Legion of Dusk. Illustrators for the Ixalan block were tasked with blending traditional fantasy aesthetics with the distinct Mesoamerican-inspired influence of the plane. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficient design and utility in black-based aggressive decks, becoming a staple in standard formats during its window of legality.
