Where it came from
Diregraf Horde was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion, a set that revisited the fan-favorite gothic horror plane of Innistrad. The card was designed to embody the 'decayed' mechanic, a thematic representation of the plane's restless undead struggling to maintain their physical forms. It serves as a classic example of the creature-heavy, graveyard-focused gameplay that defines black-aligned strategies within this specific setting.
The artwork was provided by Joshua Raphael, who leaned into the gritty, atmospheric aesthetic of Innistrad. The illustration captures the chaotic momentum of a zombie surge, emphasizing the visual storytelling of the set where relentless undead forces are a constant threat to the living population. Upon its release, the card was widely received by players as a solid, functional inclusion in limited draft environments and tribal-themed Commander decks for its ability to generate board presence.
