Where it came from
Disciple of Bolas was released in the Magic 2013 core set, appearing as a rare black creature card. The card was designed as a thematic representation of the influence of Nicol Bolas, one of the primary antagonists in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. Mechanically, it reflects the ruthless nature of the elder dragon by allowing a player to sacrifice a creature to gain life and draw cards, reinforcing the flavor of the character's demand for absolute loyalty and sacrifice.
The artwork was illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific contributor to the game's visual identity. Briclot focused on a dramatic, ominous aesthetic that emphasizes the dark, cult-like devotion of the follower. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its powerful utility in sacrifice-heavy archetypes, becoming a staple in Commander formats for its ability to provide both card advantage and life stabilization.
