Where it came from
Discreet Retreat was released in 2024 as part of the Outlaws of Thunder Junction Commander set for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed to explore a Western-themed plane, blending traditional high-fantasy elements with frontier tropes such as outlaws, heists, and vast, untamed landscapes. The card functions as an enchantment that provides tactical advantages, reflecting the set's focus on maneuvering and resource management within the high-stakes environment of Thunder Junction.
The card’s visual design, illustrated by artist Evyn Fong, captures the thematic essence of a quiet hideaway within the rugged aesthetic of the plane. Fong’s work for the set aimed to emphasize the juxtaposition between the desolate, lawless exterior of the frontier and the personal, hidden spaces characters use to regroup. Upon release, the card was received as a functional tool for players focusing on land-based strategies in the Commander format, noted for its subtle utility rather than aggressive power.
