Provenance

Where it came from

Divine Deflection was introduced as a rare card in the 2012 Magic: The Gathering expansion set, Avacyn Restored. The set was designed to center around the return of the archangel Avacyn to the plane of Innistrad, a gothic horror-themed world. Mechanically, the card was crafted to embody the set's themes of protection and divine intervention, allowing players to redirect damage dealt to them back at their opponents or creatures.

The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, who was tasked with depicting the angelic grace associated with the Avacynian church. Villeneuve focused on a luminous, ethereal aesthetic that contrasted sharply with the darker, macabre imagery prevalent elsewhere in the set. Upon its release, the card was received as a nuanced tactical tool, valued by players for its versatility as both a defensive stabilizer and a surprise offensive maneuver.
