Where it came from
Divine Presence was released in October 2000 as part of the Invasion expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set marked a narrative turning point in the game's lore, focusing on the multiverse-wide conflict against the Phyrexians. The card represents a rare enchantment designed to stabilize the game state by setting a player's life total to a fixed threshold, reflecting the set's themes of protection and celestial intervention during a period of mechanical innovation.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Mike Ploog, a notable figure in fantasy and comic art whose career spanned work for Marvel and various film productions. His interpretation of the divine theme leaned into ethereal, classical religious iconography, which stood out against the darker, biomechanical aesthetic prevalent in the Invasion block. While the card is often cited by players for its unconventional effect, it remains a distinct example of the thematic variety encouraged by the design team during this era of Magic.
