Doom Cannon was originally released in the 2002 Onslaught expansion for Magic: The Gathering, an artifact card designed to reflect the set's focus on tribal synergies and high-impact board states. Its function reflects the brutal, destructive nature of the Phage and the Cabal, the primary antagonists of the Onslaught storyline, providing players with a repeatable method to trade creatures for direct damage to opponents.

The card’s illustration was created by Matthew Mitchell, who employed a gritty, industrial aesthetic to capture the menacing nature of the contraption. Upon its release, it was regarded as a niche but flavorful rare, valued by players for its ability to turn late-game creature stalls into a decisive win condition, and it was later included in 'The List', a curated selection of reprints integrated into modern booster packs to celebrate the history of the game.
