Doomed Dissenter was released in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Amonkhet. The set draws heavy inspiration from Ancient Egyptian mythology, depicting a desert world ruled by the powerful dragon Nicol Bolas. As a common creature card, it was designed to populate the Limited gameplay environment, specifically serving as a death-trigger utility piece that reinforces the set's mechanical focus on creatures that provide value even after they expire.
