Where it came from
Downsize was originally introduced in the Dissension expansion of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in 2006, set within the urban, guild-dominated plane of Ravnica. The card was designed as a blue instant spell, reflecting the intricate political and magical maneuvering characteristic of the Azorius Senate, the guild responsible for law and order in the setting. It serves as a mechanical representation of bureaucratic hindrance, forcing creatures to shrink in both power and presence.
The art for the Ravnica Remastered version of Downsize draws upon the established visual identity of the plane, which emphasizes gothic architecture and high-fantasy urbanism. Ravnica Remastered functions as a curated retrospective of the plane's history, selecting iconic or thematic cards to present in a consolidated set. The design choices aim to evoke the feeling of Ravnican law enforcement using magical restraint to quell civil unrest, a core pillar of the guild’s narrative identity.
