Where it came from
Drana, Liberator of Malakir originally debuted in the 2015 Magic: The Gathering set Battle for Zendikar, designed as a powerful legendary Vampire Ally. The character serves as a central figure in Zendikar's lore, leading her people against the existential threat of the Eldrazi titans. Her card mechanics, centered on flying and the ability to buff other creatures through combat damage, were crafted to reflect her status as a tactician and a formidable combatant.
The specific version appearing in the New Capenna Commander set, numbered 248, is a reprint featuring updated card frames and set-specific aesthetic flourishes. By the time of this release, the card had gained significant recognition within the Commander format for its versatility as both a commander and a support piece in tribal decks. This reprint provided players with a consistent, modern iteration of a character who has become a staple of black-aligned aggressive strategies.
