Provenance

Where it came from

Dream Cache was originally printed as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion in 1999, designed for the Magic: The Gathering card game. As a common-rarity spell, it was intended to provide players with a utility effect that allowed for library manipulation, specifically drawing cards while putting others back to smooth out a player's hand. Its mechanical roots lie in the blue color pie's emphasis on strategic foresight and card selection.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, a legendary figure in the early development of Magic: The Gathering. Rush’s visual style for this piece leaned into the surreal and ethereal aesthetic prevalent in the Masques block, intended to represent the concept of dipping into a stored reservoir of potential futures. The card was eventually included in The List, a curated selection of reprints integrated into later set boosters to provide players with access to older, functional cards.
