Its foretell mechanic, which allows players to exile cards face-down to cast them later for a reduced cost, was designed to mirror the set's core concepts of prophecy and impending fate.

The illustration for the Dream Devourer was crafted by artist Bram Sels, who sought to capture the ethereal, unsettling nature of a creature that feeds on the subconscious. Sels utilized a stark contrast between the haunting, skeletal visage of the creature and the swirling, cosmic energies surrounding it to evoke a sense of otherworldly dread.
