Where it came from
Runeforge Champion was released as part of the Kaldheim set in early 2021, specifically appearing as a promotional card. The card features artwork by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to Magic: The Gathering, known for his ability to weave high-fantasy aesthetics with ethereal lighting. The design of this piece reflects the set's broader thematic inspiration, which draws heavily from Norse mythology and the icy, rugged landscape of the plane of Kaldheim.
The card was designed to support the 'Auras and Equipment' mechanical archetype prevalent within the set, functioning as a tutor that allows players to search their library for specific enhancements. Upon its release, it was well-received by players focusing on Boros-colored aggressive decks for its efficiency in providing card advantage and consistency. Its promotional status, denoted by the 'p' suffix in its collector number, highlights its role as a visually distinct variant intended to reward players participating in organized play events.
