Where it came from
Dreamstealer was released in 2017 as part of the Hour of Devastation expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the desert world of Amonkhet, the expansion depicts the catastrophic arrival of the dragon-god Nicol Bolas and the subsequent unraveling of the plane's society. The card represents the encroaching corruption and psychological terror inflicted upon the survivors during this climactic narrative arc.
The card features artwork by illustrator Anna Steinbauer, who utilized a haunting, fluid aesthetic to capture the creature's ethereal nature and its ability to strip memories from its victims. As a creature with the 'afflict' mechanic, it was designed to pressure opponents in combat, forcing them to discard cards if they failed to block. It saw moderate use in limited formats for its utility in disrupting an opponent's hand while providing a persistent threat on the battlefield.
