What it does

Affinity for Swamps (This spell costs 1 generic mana less to cast for each Swamp you control.)

Fear (This creature can't be blocked except by artifact creatures and/or black creatures.)

The longer it skulks through the corrosive gases of Mephidross, the more it adopts their thirst for death.

Provenance

Where it came from

Dross Golem was released in 2004 as part of the Darksteel set, the second expansion in the Mirrodin block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was defined by its focus on metal-based mechanics and the artificial, alien environment of the plane of Mirrodin, where the influence of the mysterious substance known as darksteel played a central role in the narrative and gameplay.

The card illustration was created by artist Adam Rex, who captured the grotesque, utilitarian aesthetic of the artifact creatures native to the Dross—a bleak, swampy region of Mirrodin. His design emphasizes the scavenged, modular construction typical of the setting's lore, where golems were frequently cobbled together from the discarded refuse and scrap metal of an indifferent world.
