Drowned Catacomb was originally introduced in the Magic 2010 core set as part of a cycle of rare dual lands designed to provide efficient mana fixing for players. These lands, which enter the battlefield tapped unless the player controls a land of a specific basic land type, were intended to balance the speed of multicolor decks while offering a strategic choice regarding turn sequencing. The Magic 2013 printing, numbered 223, maintains this functional role within the core set ecosystem.

The artwork for this iteration was created by Cliff Childs, who aimed to capture a sense of eerie, submerged decay consistent with the card's name.
