Where it came from
Drownyard Explorers was released in 2022 as part of the Jumpstart 2022 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to be a standalone, pick-up-and-play experience that emphasized thematic variety by mixing different creature types and mechanics, with this specific card appearing in the 'Detective' themed deck. The card is intended to represent the investigate mechanic, allowing players to create Clue tokens to represent the process of searching through the eerie, waterlogged ruins of Innistrad.
The card features artwork by veteran fantasy illustrator Randy Vargas, who is known for his work across various Wizards of the Coast products. His design for Drownyard Explorers leans into the atmospheric gothic horror aesthetic of the Innistrad plane, emphasizing a sense of murky, unsettling discovery. The card was received by the community as a functional utility piece within the set's limited environment, noted specifically for its synergy with decks that prioritize card advantage and graveyard interaction.
