Where it came from
Dwynen's Elite was released in July 2015 as part of the Magic Origins expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set served as the final core set for the game, designed to provide a narrative focus on the backstories and 'origins' of five iconic Planeswalker characters. Within the context of the set's green color identity, the card reflects the aesthetic and tribal themes of the Gilt-Leaf Elves from the plane of Lorwyn, emphasizing the synergy-heavy playstyle associated with Elf creature types.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a frequent contributor to the game known for his expressive and atmospheric digital style. In designing Dwynen's Elite, Voss aimed to capture the martial discipline of the elven warriors, depicting them in a cohesive, coordinated formation. Upon release, the card was well-received by players focusing on 'Elfball' or tribal synergy decks in various formats, as its ability to generate an additional token upon entry provided essential board presence for aggressive strategies.
