Earthshaking Si

Earthshaking Si was released in 2018 as part of the Global Series: Jiang Yanggu & Mu Yanling, a unique product line for Magic: The Gathering designed specifically to celebrate Chinese culture and mythology. The set was the first of its kind, featuring two preconstructed decks that introduced characters rooted in Chinese folklore, with creative direction led by Wizards of the Coast's internal team to ensure a thematic aesthetic that resonated with both veteran players and new audiences in the Chinese market.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Zhang Lu, who sought to capture the grand, elemental power of traditional Chinese landscape painting within the constraints of the game's card frame. By blending stylized natural features with the distinct visual language of Magic, the design team aimed to create a card that felt authentically epic while remaining functionally cohesive with the rest of the set. Upon its release, the card was received as a notable example of the game's efforts to diversify its thematic inspiration beyond Western high-fantasy tropes.
