Provenance

Where it came from

The Ebony Horse was released in 1993 as part of Arabian Nights, the first expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the set was inspired by the themes and stories of One Thousand and One Nights. It was designed to introduce a more narrative-driven flavor to the game, with many cards referencing specific myths and fables from Middle Eastern folklore.

The artwork for the Ebony Horse was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic early artists for the game. His design sought to capture the ethereal and mechanical nature of the legendary artifact, utilizing a distinct style that defined much of the early visual identity of the set. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility artifact that allowed players to untap their creatures, a niche but strategically significant effect in the early days of the game's competitive history.
