Where it came from
Eccentric Farmer originated in the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion before being featured in the 2022 release Innistrad: Double Feature. This set served as a stylistic anthology, collecting cards from both Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow with a distinctive monochromatic, silver-screen-inspired aesthetic. The card reflects the grim, gothic horror setting of the plane, depicting a localized story of a farmhand whose obsessive focus on his harvest borders on the surreal and the supernatural.
The artwork, illustrated by Svetlin Velinov, leans into the thematic duality of the Innistrad sets. While the original version emphasized the lush, autumnal tones of a traditional Magic: The Gathering card, the Double Feature treatment stripped away the color to evoke the texture of classic horror cinema. This design choice was intended to unify the two sets under a singular, cohesive visual language that highlights the intricate details of Velinov’s character work.
