Echoing Decay

Echoing Decay was introduced in the 2004 Darksteel expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. As part of the Mirrodin block, the set focused on the metallic plane of Mirrodin and explored the mechanical corruption introduced by the artifact known as Darksteel. The card was designed to demonstrate the unique 'echo' mechanic, which allowed a player to destroy all other creatures with the same name as the target, effectively punishing decks that relied on multiple copies of low-cost utility creatures.

The card’s artwork was rendered by the artist Dave Kendall, whose dark, visceral aesthetic was a staple of the era. Kendall’s illustration captures the necrotic, infectious nature of the spell, fitting the set’s thematic exploration of decay spreading across a metal-dominated world. Upon its release, Echoing Decay was well-received by players for its efficiency as a sideboard tool, providing a sharp answer to swarming token strategies and aggressive creature-based decks in both Limited and Constructed formats.
