Provenance

Where it came from

Echoing Return was released as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2021. Designed specifically for the Modern format and older, the set focused on bringing legacy-style mechanics and thematic depth to current play. The card itself is a functional reprint of a common originally featured in the Darksteel set of 2004, designed to interact with the graveyard by returning all copies of a creature card from a player's graveyard to their hand.

The artwork for this iteration was created by artist Titus Lunter, who adopted a style consistent with the high-fantasy aesthetic of the plane of Mirrodin. Lunter focused on capturing the recursive, spectral nature of the spell’s effect, emphasizing the visual repetition of the subjects. Upon its re-release in Modern Horizons 2, the card was received primarily as a tool for niche graveyard-based strategies and limited gameplay, valued by players for its ability to generate significant card advantage in specific tactical scenarios.
