Where it came from
Eerie Procession was released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set drew heavily from Japanese mythology and folklore, shifting the game's aesthetic toward a Shinto-inspired spirit world. This particular card was designed as a thematic spell that reflects the 'Splice onto Arcane' mechanic, a core feature of the set that allowed players to attach additional magical effects to their spells, mirroring the collaborative nature of spirits in Kamigawa lore.
The illustration for Eerie Procession was created by Japanese artist Hideaki Takamura. His design captures the ethereal, haunting quality central to the set's spirit-themed cards, utilizing a muted palette and flowing, ghostly forms to represent the influx of supernatural energy. Upon release, the card was recognized by players for its utility in deck-building strategies revolving around the Arcane spell type, serving as a vital search engine to maintain momentum during complex gameplay sequences.
