The Egg token was released as part of the 2022 Dominaria United Commander set, designed to support specific mechanics reintroduced during the expansion's focus on the classic plane of Dominaria. Tokens in this set were intended to bridge the gap between legacy gameplay and modern Commander environments, providing functional markers for players using cards that generate creature tokens. The artwork reflects the high-fantasy aesthetic consistent with the Dominaria United card set, emphasizing the organic and slightly mysterious nature of the creature it represents.

The design process for tokens within Wizards of the Coast sets involves a collaborative effort between the art direction team and freelance illustrators to ensure visual cohesion with the main expansion. While individual token artists are rarely credited on the cards themselves, the Egg design follows the established visual language of the game's creature token library. Upon release, these tokens were received as essential functional accessories for players utilizing cards like Atla Palani, Nest Tender or similar mechanics that rely on egg-based creature production.
