Where it came from
Elite Vanguard was released in the Magic 2012 core set as a reprint, originally debuting in the Magic 2010 set to establish a higher power floor for aggressive creature cards. It was designed as a quintessential one-drop soldier, intended to reward players for playing white-based aggro decks by providing a two-power threat for a single mana, a standard that had historically been reserved for rarer or more conditional cards.
The card features artwork by Steve Argyle, who captured the stoic, disciplined aesthetic of a knight in polished plate armor. The design was received by the Magic: The Gathering community as a staple of the format, serving as a reliable utility card for players looking to apply early game pressure while maintaining a cohesive tribal theme, ultimately securing its place as a reliable inclusion in numerous standard and cube environments for years following its print run.
