Where it came from
Elturel Survivors was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate set for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the set's focus on the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms campaign setting, specifically referencing the cataclysmic events surrounding the city of Elturel's descent into Avernus. Mechanically, it utilizes the 'myriad' keyword, a design choice intended to capture the flavor of a desperate group of refugees acting in unison across multiple battlefields.
The illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has been a frequent contributor to the game's aesthetic identity. The artwork emphasizes the gritty, weary nature of the survivors, aiming to evoke a sense of shared trauma and persistence in the face of planar upheaval. Upon its release, the card was generally received as a functional and flavorful utility piece for multiplayer Commander formats, particularly in decks that benefit from temporary token generation and swarm tactics.
