Where it came from
Released in 1998 as part of the Unglued set, Elvish Impersonators represents Wizards of the Coast's first dedicated foray into silver-bordered, non-tournament-legal humor cards for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to subvert the serious tone of traditional game mechanics by requiring players to physically mimic an elf, reflecting the designers' intent to prioritize interactive social gameplay and lighthearted satire over strict competitive balance.
The illustration was crafted by artist Christopher Rush, who leaned into the absurdity of the prompt by depicting figures attempting to pass as elves. At the time of its release, the card was received as a novelty experiment that challenged players' perceptions of the game's boundaries, eventually establishing a long-standing tradition of 'Un-sets' that continue to serve as a creative outlet for the development team to explore unconventional design space.
