Ember-Fist Zubera was released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa expansion, a set heavily inspired by Japanese mythology and folklore. The card belongs to a cycle of five Zubera spirits, creatures designed to reward players for building decks around a specific tribe. These spirits featured a distinct death trigger mechanic, where their power scaled based on how many Zubera had been put into a graveyard during a single turn, encouraging a strategic, sacrificial style of play.

The card was illustrated by Darrell Riche, who utilized a flowing, ethereal style to capture the spirit-like essence of the Kamigawa creatures. While the Zubera cycle was initially viewed as a niche design within the set, Ember-Fist Zubera became a foundational piece for casual 'tribal' decks and later saw renewed interest in specific formats where graveyard-focused mechanics could be fully optimized.
