Where it came from
Embiggen was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed as the fourth installment in the 'Un-' series, which functions outside the game's standard competitive ruleset, allowing for experimental and humorous mechanics. The card was specifically crafted to play with the 'Silver-bordered' tradition of bending the internal logic of the game, utilizing a growth mechanic that rewards the player for using cards with specific humorous creature types.
The artwork and visual design were handled by artist Wisnu Tan, who captured the card's theme of rapid, cartoonish expansion. By allowing a creature to grow based on the number of words in its name, the design highlights the whimsical and meta-textual nature of the Unfinity set. It was received by the player community as a staple of the set's unique 'Commander' experience, celebrated for its ability to create disproportionately powerful creatures in a casual, rule-bending environment.
