Enduring Scalelord

Enduring Scalelord was originally introduced in the Fate Reforged expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 2015. It was designed as part of a cycle of cards that reward players for placing +1/+1 counters on their creatures, specifically interacting with the mechanics of the Sultai and Temur clans during the narrative arc of the Tarkir block. Its inclusion in the 2018 Commander Anthology Volume II provided a reprint for a card that had become a niche but reliable engine for dragon-themed and counter-synergy decks in the Commander format.

The artwork, rendered by Clint Cearley, depicts the dragon with an imposing, serpentine form that emphasizes the enduring nature suggested by its ability to generate its own power. Cearley, a frequent contributor to the game’s aesthetic, utilized high-contrast scales and a sweeping composition to create a sense of scale and predatory grace. The card’s design was received by the player base as a powerful, albeit mana-intensive, threat that could quickly spiral out of control if left unanswered on the battlefield.
