Where it came from
Energy Reserve is a token card introduced as part of the Modern Horizons 3 set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, released in June 2024. Tokens serve as functional representations of game states created by other cards, and this specific design was included to track the accumulation of energy counters, a recurring mechanic within the Modern Horizons design philosophy of integrating complex, fan-favorite mechanics from Magic's history into a modern draft environment.
The card features artwork commissioned by Wizards of the Coast to maintain thematic consistency with the set's aesthetic, which leans heavily into high-fantasy imagery and the convergence of different timelines within the game's multiverse. Like most tokens in the set, it was designed for utility and ease of visual recognition during gameplay, ensuring that players could clearly delineate between their permanent cards and the temporary counters generated by cards such as those featuring the energy mechanic.
