Enfeeblement

Enfeeblement first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the game's foundational black-aligned mechanics that focus on weakening creatures. By the time it was reprinted in the Sixth Edition in 1999, it had become a hallmark of the game's early design philosophy, which emphasized direct resource interaction and permanent-based debuffs. This specific iteration served as one of the staple 'enchant creature' cards that defined limited play environments during the late nineties.

The artwork for this version was produced by Jesper Myrfors, the original art director for the game, who utilized a stark, visceral style consistent with the grim aesthetic of early Magic. His visual direction sought to convey the theme of magical decay and frailty, favoring dark, atmospheric imagery that reflected the oppressive nature of the card's effect. Within the Sixth Edition, the card was updated with the modern frame and templating that sought to streamline gameplay, marking a transitional era in the game's visual identity.
