Where it came from
Enforcer Griffin was released as part of the War of the Spark expansion for Magic: The Gathering, which debuted in May 2019. This set centered on a climactic narrative arc where the major Planeswalker characters of the game converged on the plane of Ravnica to battle the villainous Nicol Bolas. The card reflects the set's high-stakes atmosphere, featuring a creature design intended to bolster the white-aligned armies defending the city against the invading forces.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who contributed to the set's cohesive aesthetic of war-torn urban fantasy. Like many common-rarity cards in the set, the design sought to provide functional utility for limited play environments—specifically the draft format—while reinforcing the visual storytelling of the conflict. It was received as a straightforward, defensive creature that aligned with the set's thematic focus on the desperate struggle for the fate of the multiverse.
