Provenance

Where it came from

The Ensouled Scimitar was released in 2004 as part of the Fifth Dawn expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Serving as the final set in the Mirrodin block, Fifth Dawn introduced a heavy emphasis on artifacts and the interaction between metal and soul, thematic elements that defined the setting of a world made entirely of clockwork and steel.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Trevor Hairsine, who utilized a sharp, industrial aesthetic to convey the weapon's ability to animate itself. Within the game’s mechanics, the card allows players to convert an artifact into a creature, reflecting the block's focus on the blurry line between inanimate objects and living, breathing constructs in the Mirrodin universe.
