Where it came from
Equilibrium was originally released as a rare enchantment in the Tempest expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1997. Designed as part of the game's evolving mechanics, it allowed players to return a creature to its owner's hand whenever they cast a creature spell, provided they paid an additional generic mana. This effect provided a strategic utility for 'bounce' strategies, enabling players to trigger 'enter the battlefield' effects repeatedly while simultaneously disrupting an opponent's board state.
The Seventh Edition printing, marked with the 71★ collector number, features artwork by artist Donato Giancola. This version was part of the 2002 core set release, which updated the card frames to the modern layout of the era. Giancola’s illustration maintains the surreal, atmospheric quality consistent with the card's theme of balance and shifting state. While Equilibrium saw niche use in competitive play, it remains a notable example of the complex, interactive design philosophy prevalent in mid-90s Magic sets.
