Provenance

Where it came from

Erratic Portal first appeared as a rare card in the Exodus expansion, released in 1998 as the final installment of the Rath Cycle. Mechanically designed to force creatures back into their owners' hands, it reflects the high-risk, high-reward tactical shifts common in late-nineties Magic: The Gathering development, where designers experimented with artifacts that could disrupt the battlefield tempo.

The artwork was provided by the artist Kev Walker, whose distinctively dark and surreal style became a hallmark of the era's aesthetic. Walker sought to visualize the instability of interdimensional travel through warped geometry and an imposing, ominous architectural gateway. Upon its debut, the card was viewed primarily as a niche utility tool, finding its most devoted audience among players who favored complex combo-based strategies rather than aggressive creature combat.
