Provenance

Where it came from

The Ethersworn Shieldmage was released in 2010 as part of the Archenemy expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set introduced a unique format where one player acts as the archenemy against a team of opponents, utilizing a specialized deck of oversized 'scheme' cards. The Shieldmage was designed to fit into the artifact-heavy theme of the plane of Esper, which was a core component of the preceding Shards of Alara block.

The card features artwork by the illustrator Volkan Baga, who was tasked with visualizing the Esper aesthetic of filigree and artificial life. The design process for these sets focused on mechanical synergy within the tribal artifact archetypes of that era. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, utility-focused creature, prized by players for its ability to provide protection through its triggered ability when entering the battlefield.
