Where it came from
Excavation Technique was released in 2021 as part of the Commander 2021 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Specifically included in the Prismari Performance deck, the card was designed to support the set's focus on spellslinging and artifact-based ramp, reflecting the artistic and academic themes of the Strixhaven University setting.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss. His design utilizes a vibrant, painterly style that captures the chaotic energy of magical research at the college. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its political utility in multiplayer Commander games, allowing the caster to help an opponent while generating significant value for themselves.
