Where it came from
Excommunicate was released in 2008 as part of the Shards of Alara expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed as a white common spell meant to provide players with a temporary tempo advantage by placing a creature on top of its owner's library, reflecting the tactical 'flicker' or 'delay' mechanics often found in the color's thematic identity.
The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, who depicted a stern, armored figure performing a ritualistic dismissal. His illustration was intended to capture the authoritative, order-driven nature of the Esper shard, balancing the card’s mechanical simplicity with the high-fantasy aesthetic that defined the Alara block's exploration of diverse, magically distinct worlds.
