Provenance

Where it came from

Execute was printed as an uncommon instant in the Ninth Edition core set, released by Wizards of the Coast in July 2005. As a core set release, it functioned as a curated anthology of Magic: The Gathering cards, intended to provide a stable foundation for the game's evolving mechanics and to help newer players learn the core identity of the black color mana.

The card features artwork by Gary Ruddell, an illustrator known for his atmospheric and surrealist contributions to the early-to-mid 2000s era of the game. Ruddell utilized a moody, high-contrast style that fit the grim, functional nature of the card, which depicts a lethal magical strike. The set was noted at the time for being the first to feature the modern card frame design for a core set, which updated the presentation of the art and text boxes.
