Where it came from
Exert Influence is a rare card from the Battle for Zendikar set, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2015. This specific version was issued as a promotional card, distributed primarily through the Friday Night Magic program. The set was designed to revisit the plane of Zendikar, focusing on the conflict between the local inhabitants and the encroaching Eldrazi titans, a theme that influenced the card's mechanical design of gaining control over an opponent's creature.
The artwork for this piece was created by Johann Bodin, who depicted a Kor mystic utilizing channeled energy to command an Eldrazi drone. Bodin's contribution was intended to emphasize the desperation and tactical ingenuity of the Zendikari resistance. Within the Magic: The Gathering community, the card is often discussed for its role in limited formats, where its scaling effect—dependent on the number of lands controlled—made it a significant, albeit conditional, inclusion for players drafting the set.
