Provenance

Where it came from

Exploration was first released in the 1998 Urza's Saga expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Mark Rosewater during a period when the game was exploring themes of resource acceleration. The card allows players to play an additional land during each of their turns, a mechanic that fundamentally altered the pace of the game and remains a staple in green-aligned decks. Its design sought to reward players who built their strategies around land-based synergies and mana ramp.

The version from the Conspiracy set, released in 2014, features updated artwork by Jung Park. This set was designed as a unique, draft-focused multiplayer experience that introduced social mechanics and political gameplay to the Magic ecosystem. The inclusion of Exploration in this set was well-received by the player base, as it provided a highly sought-after functional reprint that complemented the set's emphasis on drafting powerful, complex cards.
